Thoughts from the Week

Overall, it was a good week for the Kamloops Blazers as they grabbed four of a possible six points going 2-1-0-0 in three home games.

The 7-3 loss on Wednesday night versus the Kootenay Ice was the first of its kind that the Blazers had been on the wrong end of this season. It was the most goals the Blazers had allowed this season, and the first time the hockey club had lost by 3+ goals all season. Goaltenders Cole Cheveldave and Cam Lanigan each had arguably their roughest outings of the year. These types of games are bound to happen once in a while, the best thing to do is put them in the past and move on!

The Blazers redeemed their fans and themselves with two weekend wins in convincing fashion. The Blazers outshot their opponents 90-37 and won 4-1 against the Victoria Royals on Friday and 8-2 against the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday.

On Friday, the Blazers could have easily scored twice as many goals if it weren’t for goaltender Keith Hamilton and errant shots. Hamilton played well for the Royals and the Blazers struggled to hit the net at times. It was still a convincing win for the Blazers.

On Saturday, the Blazers took advantage of a fatigued Seattle team and won 8-2. Rookie Daniel Cotton was given the nod in goal over 19-year-old Calvin Pickard. Pickard, who is arguably one of the better goaltenders in the WHL, was given a rare night off. The depth of the Blazers once again showed with eight different players scoring goals.

The Blazers have a tough few weeks ahead before the Christmas break. They will play eight of their next eleven games before Christmas on the road. The Blazers are in Victoria on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Royals are a much better team at home, boasting a 7-5-0-1 record.

The Blazers return home on Thursday and will host the Prince George Cougars Friday and Victoria Royals on Saturday. The turnaround is quick and the Blazers will have their hands full this week.

A couple of interesting stats:

Compared to last season before Christmas, the Blazers had a 15-18-1-1 record. This year, the Blazers are 16-7-1-0 with eleven games to go before the break. The Blazers have already recorded more wins in the first half of the season compared to last year.

When the Blazers trail after the first period, the team is an astonishing 4-0-1-0 this season. Last season, the Blazers were only 2-21-2-2 when trailing after the first period. This team is resilient.

Blazers Week in Review, November 28

Week in Review:

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011 vs. Kootenay Ice – 7-3 Loss

It was one of those rare games where nothing went the Blazers way. The Blazers had their chances in the first period and played pretty well as both teams traded goals for a 1-1 tie. The second period was forgetful as the Ice scored six goals, three on each Blazers goaltender and took a 7-1 lead. The six goals were scored on only 10 shots. The Blazers were out of the game at that point, but didn’t give up and scored two third period goals to make it a 7-3 final. Josh Caron was lost due to a elbowing major and was then suspended for three games. Tim Bozon, Brendan Ranford and Bronson Maschmeyer scored goals for the Blazers. Cole Cheveldave started the game, was pulled for a short span, but finished the game for the Blazers and took the loss in goal. Full Recap and Highlights.

Friday, November 25th, 2011 vs. Victoria Royals – 4-1 Win

The Blazers were in need of redemption on home ice and got that with a 4-1 win Friday night. Dylan Willick opened the scoring for the Blazers with his line mates Logan McVeigh and Matt Needham picking up assists. The Blazers outshot the Royals 13-6 in the first period. Chase Schaber made it 2-0 for the Blazers in the second period as the home team continued to pepper shots at Royals goaltender Keith Hamilton. The Blazers held a 32-14 advantage after two periods. The Blazers and Royals each traded goals in the third period, and Willick iced it with an empty net goal for a 4-1 win. Full Recap and Highlights.

Saturday, November 26th, 2011 vs. Seattle Thunderbirds – 8-2 Win

On Saturday, the Blazers cruised over the Thunderbirds 8-2 on home ice. The Blazers held a 1-0 lead after the first period despite outshooting their opponents 19-3 in the period. In the second period, the Blazers started to get on the scoreboard as Brendan Ranford, Cole Ully and Logan McVeigh each scored, and the Thunderbirds got a goal for a 4-1 lead for the Blazers. The Blazers continued their strong play in the third period adding four more goals to top the Thunderbirds 8-2. The Blazers had eight different goal scorers in the win. Full Recap and Highlights.

Thoughts from the Weekend, Three Games this Week

The Blazers played two tough road games this weekend and took 3 of a possible 4 points. On Friday night, the Blazers played in Spokane and walked away with a 2-1 victory. It was a terrific road game as the Blazers stuck to their game plan. Spokane is a tough building to win in as the Chiefs carried a 9-1-0-0 home record before the Blazers victory.

On Saturday night, the Blazers were up against the Western Conference’s top team in the Tri-City Americans. The building was electric as the building was near a sell out and the fans were treated with a great game. The Ams are known for coming out hard and they did taking a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Being down in games may have fazed the Blazers in the past, but not this year. The Blazers continued to get stronger as the game went on and scored two goals in the third period to tie the game. They failed to capitalize on a couple of breakaways, but the Blazers still pushed the Americans to overtime. The Americans had the first chance and capitalized for a 3-2 overtime win.

It was another hurdle the 2011-12 Blazers overcame. They played well and earned points on the road, where they may have stumbled in the past. The Blazers maintain one of the best road records in the WHL with a 7-2-1-0 mark.

The penalty kill has been almost perfect over the past six games, going 24-for-26 allowing one goal at 5-on-4 and one goal at 5-on-3. The strong penalty kill has pushed the Blazers into 2nd in the WHL at %. What a difference a new year makes.

Brock Balson didn’t look out of place in his Blazers debut this weekend. The 18-year-old forward may have been a bit tentative but made good plays at both ends of the ice. He will fit in with the team and the system well.

Goaltender Cole Cheveldave played two great games this weekend. Lanigan and Cheveldave have really solidified the Blazers goaltending which was a big question mark entering this season. Both goaltenders are ranked among the top 5 in the WHL. The Blazers are the only team with two goaltenders ranked in the top 10 in the WHL statistically.

The Blazers have three home games this week and play six of their next eight games at home prior to an Eastern Conference Road Swing to finish off the first half of the season. The Kootenay Ice are in town tomorrow night for the first and only time this year. The Blazers also host the Victoria Royals on Friday and the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday night.

Can you believe the 2010-11 WHL Champion Ice have not played a game in Kamloops since November 27, 2009? This was actually the coaching debut of current Head Coach, Guy Charron. The Blazers had a healthy 4-0 lead going into the third period, but were trailing 5-4 late in the third period and actually tied the game up with only 12 seconds left. The Ice went on to win the game in a shootout 6-5.

Kamloops Blazers Week in Review, November 21

Week in Review:

Friday, November 18th, 2011 at Spokane Chiefs – 2-1 Win

The Blazers played a solid road game in earning a 2-1 win in Spokane Friday night. The Chiefs opened the scoring on a 3-on-2 play that was finished off by Colin Valcourt for a 1-0 lead. The Blazers got one back as Logan McVeigh set up Dylan Willick for a shorthanded marker. It was the Blazers league leading 9th shorthanded goal of the season. The second period featured a couple of tilts with tough guys Josh Caron and Darren Kramer, and skilled players Steve Kuhn and Colin Smith. The Blazers broke the tie as Tim Bozon scored in the third period. Cole Cheveldave earned the win with 28 saves. Full Recap and Highlights.

Saturday, November 19th, 2011 at Tri-City Americans – 3-2 Overtime Loss

On Saturday, the Blazers came back from a 2-0 deficit to send the game to overtime, but lost 3-2 in Tri-City. The Americans were strong to start the game scoring a beautiful 5-on-3 goal and capitalizing on a breakaway for a 2-0 lead through the first period. The Blazers continued to get stronger as the game went on, but goaltender Ty Rimmer was on his game for the Americans. The Blazers solved Rimmer in the third period with a power play goal by Chase Schaber and another goal by Matt Needham. The Americans scored in overtime though as Justin Feser capitalized on a 2-on-1. Goaltender Cole Cheveldave was strong again making 33 saves. Full Recap and Highlights.

Random Kamloops Blazers Thoughts

Here are some thoughts about the Kamloops Blazers this week:

Congratulations to 16-year-old forward Matt Needham for being selected to play for Team Pacific at the upcoming U-17 World Challenge in Windsor from December 29th – January 4th. Team Pacific is made up of 16-year-old players from B.C. and Alberta. Every player on Team Pacific’s roster plays in the WHL.

There was a cheque presentation prior to the Blazers home game on Saturday when they defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-2. The presentation was to the Canadian Breast Cancer Society for $8,250. This is an increase over the past two seasons where the Blazers have raised money through jersey and stick auctions. Thanks to everyone who donated to this great cause.

Don’t forget, the Blazers are raising money for Men’s Cancer during the month of November. Donations have gone well as the players have raised over $1000 in donations for their moustaches. To keep up to date or to donate, Follow This Link.

Colin Smith is in Regina to compete for Team WHL at the 2011 Subway Super Series. He will play tomorrow night for Team WHL. On Thursday, Smith will fly to Spokane and meet the team.

The Blazers are hitting the road on Thursday and trying something a little different. They will depart from Kamloops at about 7:00am and practice in Osoyoos around lunch time. The team will then travel to Spokane following lunch in Osoyoos. In the past, the Blazers have practiced at home before they have departed.

There are some telling stats through 19 games this season. The Blazers have only trailed after two periods in three of 19 games this season. Three of the team’s six losses have come when the team was tied or led after two periods.

The Blazers are 8-0-0-0 in games where the score differential is 3+ goals. This means in all six of the Blazers losses they have only lost by one or two goals. The Blazers have allowed three empty net goals and are 1-4-0-0 in games with a 2-goal differential. If empty net goals are taken out of the equation, this shows that five of the Blazers six losses have been by only one goal.

What is with the high power play success rates among WHL teams this season? Believe it or not 19 of the 22 teams have a power play succession rate of at least 20.0%. In 2010-11 only 10 of the 22 teams finished with a succession rate of at least 20.0%. This also means that the penalty kill percentages are much lower then normal.

The Blazers success continues to be driven by team play with all 20 players contributing on a night by night basis. Goaltenders Cam Lanigan and Cole Cheveldave have virtually the same stats and ten different players have scored game winning goals for the Blazers. The teams continued success relies on team efforts night in and night out.

Blazers Week in Review, November 14th

Week in Review:

Friday, November 11th, 2011 vs. Red Deer Rebels – 5-3 Loss

The Red Deer Rebels came into Kamloops and walked away with a 5-3 win. The game was close as the Blazers scored first and were tied after the first and second period. The Rebels took a lead in the third period and scored an empty net goal for a 5-3 victory. The Blazers outshot the Rebels 27-23. Goal scorers for the Blazers were Logan McVeigh, Colin Smith and Ryan Hanes. Goaltender Cole Cheveldave didn’t have his best outing in stopping 18 shots for the Blazers. Full Recap and Highlights.

Saturday, November 12th, 2011 vs. Edmonton Oil Kings – 5-2 Win

The Blazers dominated this game from start to finish. They outshot the Oil Kings 46-23 including 22-1 in the second period and won 5-2. Chase Schaber, Dylan Willick and Tim Bozon scored in the first two periods as the Blazers led 3-0. The Oil Kings came back with two goals, but the Blazers sealed the deal as JC Lipon and Chase Souto scored late goals for the Blazers. Goaltender Cam Lanigan earned the win over his former team with 21 saves. Full Recap and Highlights.

Smith to play with Team WHL for Subway Super Series this week

Blazers’ forward Colin Smith was added to Team WHL for the Subway Super Series last week. The 18-year-old left for Regina Monday and will play on Wednesday, November 16th in Regina against Team Russia. The Edmonton native is leading the Blazers in scoring this season with 11 goals, 12 assists for 23 points in 19 games. He will rejoin the Blazers in Spokane on Thursday. Team WHL roster.

November Stache Bash

The Kamloops Blazers hockey club have been growing moustaches throughout the month of November to support Men’s Cancer. To find out more information or to donate, follow this link. Thanks to everyone who has donated money or bought the moustaches and underwear on the concourse this past weekend. More moustaches and underwear will be available for fans to purchase at the Blazers home games later this month.

Blazers Make Roster Moves

The Kamloops Blazers made a few transactions early Monday afternoon as 19-year-old forward, J.T. Barnett was sent to the Everett Silvertips in exchange for a 3rd round WHL Bantam Draft Pick in 2013.

The Blazers also added Kamloops native Brock Balson to the roster. The 18-year-old forward was playing with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks this season and put up 10 goals, 9 assists for 19 points in 20 games. The 6’1”, 200lb forward played last season with the Prince Albert Raiders and had a goal and two assists in 48 games. He will join the team on Tuesday and should see game action this weekend.

These transactions leave the Blazers with 23 players on the roster, including 13 forwards, 8 defensemen and 2 goaltenders.

On the Road Down South

The Kamloops Blazers are on the road this week as they will play in Spokane on Friday night and in Tri-City on Saturday. Spokane and Tri-City are among the leaders in the Western Conference again this year. This will be a good test for the Blazers who are 6-2-0-0 on the road this year.

Last season the Blazers were outscored 20-6 in two games in Spokane and 12-3 in two games in Tri-City. The Blazers last won in Spokane on November 29, 2008 and in Tri-City on December 29, 2008.

WEEKEND GAMES, COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENTS

L to R: Chase Schaber, Austin Madaisky, Ryan Hanes, J.T. Barnett, Josh Caron.
The Blazers are preparing for home games on Friday and Saturday night against two Central Division opponents. The Red Deer Rebels will be here for an afternoon game on Friday, November 11th at 2:00pm. The Edmonton Oil Kings will play here on Saturday, November 12th at 7:00pm.

Believe it or not, the Rebels and Oil Kings both did not play a game at the Interior Savings Centre last season. In fact, the last time the Rebels were here was on January 15th, 2010 and the Oil Kings made their last visit on December 5th, 2009.

This season the Blazers won’t play games in Edmonton, Calgary and Kootenay. Edmonton and Calgary will both visit the ISC twice. The defending WHL Champion Kootenay Ice will be here on November 23rd in the only match up between the Blazers and Ice.

Community service is a huge part of being a junior hockey player. The Blazers are especially involved in the community over these next two weeks since they don’t play any weekday games. On Tuesday, the non High School players were either presenting the RCMP sponsored EDGE program to Grade 5 and 6 students or Carpet Bowling with Seniors.

Today, the Blazers will be at the North Shore Wendy’s at 6:00pm to have some dinner and share some stories. The public is welcome to join the team.

On Thursday, two players will be doing the EDGE presentation and the rest of the team will be playing a “Sit Down” Floor hockey game with special needs students.

For those who are unaware, EDGE stands for Educate, Develop, Grow and Excel. Six Blazers went to Vancouver in September and were accompanied by members of the Kamloops RCMP detachment. The players went through different workshops which included visiting a Recovery Center and talking to patients, visiting with an ex-Hells Angel member and touring the downtown Eastside of Vancouver. The players present and share their eye-opening experiences to Grade 5 and 6 students throughout the Kamloops School district.

Lastly, the Blazers will be hosting a post-game Fan Skate following the game on Friday afternoon. All fans are welcome to bring their skates and join the Blazers on the ice.

Make sure to come out and support your B.C. Division leading Kamloops Blazers this weekend! You won’t regret it!
